CHAPTER 5: ANALYSIS OF THE SURVEY ON SATISFACTION WITH SAFETY CLIMATE IN SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES.

5.І. Objectives and tasks of the conducted survey.

With the help of the survey conducted on the basis of the opinion of lecturers, employees and students in period (March to May) 2016 we have drawn up procedures for perception of the safety climate and measuring its level.

The main objective of the survey is to assess the level of satisfaction with the workplace safety at school and university. The conducted survey is subject to the target and solving the tasks in this thesis. It passes through three stages:

– preparation,

– conducting and summary,

– analysing the results.

Along with this, the conducted survey fulfils an important task – by an actual view of the opinion of all participants in the educational process with their own particular responsibilities to help each of them to raise the level of their efficiency and quality, and thus the overall customer service . Each of the the parties involved, more or less, in one form or another is a consumer of the services: administrative, educational and others.

5.2. Determining the type of questions of the survey.

The type of the questions of the survey is important from the standpoint of processing and analysis of information.

Types of questions used in the survey.

The questions may be:

– closed questions: certain variants of questions are given and there are matches of possible answers and the respondent shall designate one or more of them.
– open questions: The respondent is left free to give whatever answer.

For their part the “closed” questions are divided into questions with options for:

* two answers;

* possibility of choosing between more answers;

* answer-grade by which the respondent can agree to varying degrees;

* the answers show the importance of a particular indicator for the respondent.

5.3. Formulation of the questions in the questionnaires. Answers to the questions in the questionnaire.

The survey questionnaire card contains 28 questions that change from more specific to more

general ones. They are oriented towards all respondents. The summarized analysis of the form of the questions in the survey questionnaire card points out that there have been used open and closed questions, dichotomous and multivariate questions so that greater opportunities could be achieved for expressing an own opinion of the respondents. The total number of respondents is 411.

The scale of the safety climate is presented in the attached table 5.1. In the annexed to it questionnaire form are presented questions and grades with the most appropriate response: “completely agree”; “agree”;

“hesitate”; “disagree”; “strongly disagree.”

Each of the questions from the questionnaire has a specific task

which when analysed and summarized, enables the precise implementation of the objective, namely: “Improving the conditions of workplace safety at school and university”. The questions of the survey questionnaire card are directly connected to the tasks solved at the thesis.

Target groups in the survey

Due to the specific objective “Improving the conditions of workplace safety in schools and universities” it is appropriate to have target groups of respondents from the number of: lecturers, teachers, employees and students.

5.5. Summary of the results from the questions in the survey questionnaire cards.

The results for the number of grades of the answers are summarized in Table 5.2. The grades of the answers given in section 5.3 of this chapter are marked with numbers from 1 to 5 and are of the type: “1-totally agree”; “2-agree”; “3 hesitate” “4 disagree”; “5 strongly disagree.” The questions with the respective number are from table 5.1.

The rectangular table of numbers represents a matrix of the type (m × n). Where „ m“ are the rows with the questions asked in the survey, and „n „ are the columns with the received answers – fig.5.1. Matrix representation enables to carry out in a rational manner a number of mathematical operations: comparison of numerical results from the surveys of different educational structures.

The presented diagrams show:

* Grade „1-totally agree“ has the greatest number for the following statements:

– the university administration pays more attention to health and safety rather than to profit and profitability;

– the management of the university shares with the employees and students the results of safety checks and investigations of accidents;

* Grade „3-hesitate“ has the greatest number for the following statements:

– the university has the necessary resources to ensure safe working conditions;

– the university administration takes into account the personal opinion on safe working conditions;

– during the process of training, the safety rules and measures are taken properly and with sufficient staff;

* Grade “4 disagree” has the largest number and a decrease in the succession of the questions No. 2, 1, 3, 4 …….9, 13 and 14.

* Grade “5 strongly disagree” has the largest number and a decrease in the succession of the questions No. 13, 14, 6, 11 …….9, 13 and 12.

* Close are the numbers of respondents that gave grades for:

1-totally agree” and “2-agree” to the questions No. 1, 4, 8, 11 and 13.

“3 hesitate” and “4 disagree” to question No. 1.

“4 disagree” and “5 strongly disagree” to questions No. 4, 5, 13,14.

The wording of the above mentioned questions are predented in table 5.1.

5.6. A more summarized assessment. The number matrix of table 5.2. Helps us make the following more summarized assessment:

5.6a.- assessment of management and regulations for safe working conditions based on responses to the questions from No. 1 to No. 10;

5.6b.- assessment of the partnership and trends of safety at work based on responses to the questions from No 11 to No. 14;

5.6c.- assessment the level of safety climate based on responses to the questions from No 1 to №14 .

The results of the assessment mentioned in item 5.6a, items 5.6b and 5.6d. are presented in the annexed tables 5.3; 5.4; 5.5

Analysis of the results of the inspections shows:

* For case 5.6c : 9,73% “totally agree”; 10,47% – “agree”; 20,68% – “hesitate”; 29,68% – “disagree”; 29,44% – strongly disagree.

* Despite of the fact which questions does the survey include, the number of grades between “totally agree” and “agree” and between grades “disagree” and “strongly disagree” has minor differences, which indicates for the possibility of mutual transition from one group of grades to another.

* The number of hesitating is large, which requires to study and creating conditions for

more particular position for this type of assessment.

* It is necessary to study the reasons for the large number of “disagree” and “strongly disagree and implementation of measures for safety climate

In order to achieve higher conviction.

5.7. Analysis of the structure of the respondents.

The analysis is made on the basis of answers to questions No. 15 – No. 27. They have the form, presented bellow.

Among the respondents prevail:

– men who make up 63.50 % of all;

– unmarried, representing 79.56%;

– age of the participants, according to the answer to question No. 15, at highest participation % of 47.93% for age (16-20) and at 15.82% participation for age (21-25).

The above shows that among the respondents mainly dominate the students. They study in institutions that give education according to the answer to question No. 17. Among the respondents:

– the highest number – 81.02% – have those who are taught in school that has functioned for (5-10) years;

– the least – 0.97% in school with practice over 21 years.

Conclusions

We have determined the objectives of the survey and the tasks to be solved with the help of it for the study of the satisfaction from the safety climate in schools and universities. We have presented the principle structuring of the types of questions. Formulation of the questions in the survey questionnaire cards. We have analysed the responses to the questions. We have presented concrete results of the survey, which form guidelines for improving the climate of safety.
